No Australian rule bars privacy coins; CoinSpot dropped Monero in 2020 amid reported regulatory pressure, but Zcash still trades on CoinSpot and Swyftx.

Dates: the rule has been in force since 31 Aug 2020 and the rule on self-hosted wallets since 31 Mar 2026.
No Australian law or AUSTRAC rule was found that bars individuals from holding privacy coins or bars registered exchanges from listing them, and the Department of Home Affairs page on the AML/CTF reforms for the sector, which gives 31 March 2026 as the commencement date, mentions no privacy-coin or mixer measure. In August 2020 CoinSpot told clients holding Monero, Bytecoin and Zcoin that trading in them would halt from 31 August; ForkLog said the move related to regulatory requirements, CoinCodex quoted a CoinSpot support representative referring to 'pressure from external institutions', and a reported Swyftx delisting was not confirmed at the time. On 13 October 2026 CoinSpot's Monero page said the coin was 'unavailable to trade at this time', Swyftx quoted no Monero price, and BTC Markets, Independent Reserve and CoinJar listed no Monero market, while CoinSpot still quoted Zcash and Dash and Swyftx quoted Zcash, Horizen and Beam. No Australian rule or sanctions designation aimed at mixers or privacy protocols was identified, although the AUSTRAC and DFAT websites could not be reached for this check.
Instrument: CoinSpot halt of Monero, Bytecoin and Zcoin trading from 31 August 2020 (an exchange decision, not a rule)

Self-hosted wallets
Owner details since 31 Mar 2026
Under the AML/CTF Rules 2025, an Australian virtual asset firm sending to a self-hosted wallet must collect payer information and the payee's full name and verify the payer, and its AML/CTF policies must set out how it identifies the payee and any steps it takes to verify who controls the wallet.
Section 8-3 (item 7) of the AML/CTF Rules 2025 sets the information for transfers to a self-hosted wallet, subsection 8-8(8) removes the duty to pass it on, and section 5-17(6) requires policies on how the firm determines whether a wallet is custodial or self-hosted, identifies the payee, verifies the controller and manages the risk where the controller has not been verified; incoming transfers from self-hosted wallets must carry payer information, the payee's name and tracing information (section 8-4, item 8). Section 46A of the amended AML/CTF Act requires a report to AUSTRAC within 10 business days for transfers to or from a self-hosted wallet whose controller the firm has not verified, but section 11 of the Transitional Rules 2026 disapplies it for services a firm began providing before 31 March 2029, and section 12 delayed the transfer-of-value obligations until 1 July 2026 for registrable virtual asset services not covered by item 50A of table 1 in section 6 of the Act. A class exemption from initial customer due diligence covers occasional withdrawals of under AUD 1,000 into a self-hosted wallet controlled by the payee (Chapter 4, inserted by F2026L00354). No AUSTRAC rule on privacy wallets or shielded addresses was found in these instruments, and AUSTRAC's website timed out during this check.

Exchanges and their restrictions
The 14 exchanges on this site, with the 32 spot markets they list for the seven coins, as checked on 13 Oct 2026. The exchange data records where each listing is restricted as text, so this page quotes each passage that names Australia, and marks the cells it comes from. An exchange with no such passage has no restriction for Australia on record here, which does not mean that it is licensed there or open to its residents. A listing is not an endorsement.

Passages that name Australia
- ZEC Restricted Not offered to clients in India (since 10 April 2026), the UAE (since 16 June 2026) or Australia (on Kraken's licensing page, which gives no start date)
- XMR Restricted Not offered to clients in the UK (since November 2021, per press reports), Ireland and Belgium (since 10 May 2024), the rest of the EEA (since 31 October 2024), Canada (since 2 September 2025), India (since 10 April 2026), the UAE (since 16 June 2026) or Australia The Ireland, Belgium, EEA, Canada, India and UAE restrictions are on Kraken's own notices, and Kraken's licensing page, last updated on 30 September 2026, lists XMR among the assets that clients in the UK and the EEA cannot deposit or trade and that clients in Canada and Australia cannot deposit, hold or trade. The page gives no start dates, so the UK date rests on press reports of a 2021 client letter and Australia has none.
- All coins: US-headquartered platform; it ceased operations in the UK, EEA and Australia on 6 Apr 2026, leaving existing accounts there withdrawal-only
Self-hosted wallets for the seven coins
The nine wallets on the Wallets page that hold at least one of the seven coins, with the coins and platforms each supports. The wallet data does not record where each wallet is offered, so this list is the same on every country page, and Australia's own rules, set out above, apply to their use. A listing is not an endorsement.
