Two or three privacy protocols side by side: what each one is, how much it holds, what it hides and what it leaves visible, how large its anonymity set is, and what its profile lists in audits and incidents. A protocol listed here is not endorsed by this site.

23 protocols with a profile can be compared. The default view shows Railgun, Privacy Pools and Zcash.

How it keeps things privateA non-custodial set of smart contracts on Ethereum and other EVM networks that lets users hold, send, swap and use tokens from private balances.Zero-knowledge privacy pools on Ethereum and other chains that break the on-chain link between a deposit and a withdrawal, but only for deposits a screening provider has approved.Proof-of-work cryptocurrency, launched in 2016, whose shielded pools use zero-knowledge proofs to hide the sender, receiver and amount of ZEC payments.
What it hides
  • Which notes are spent, and the token, amount, sender and recipient of each transfer, swap or other DeFi action made from a shielded balance.
  • The user's own public address as the payer of gas, when a broadcaster submits the transaction: on a block explorer it appears to come from the broadcaster.
  • Which deposit a private withdrawal comes from: the proof shows that the user owns one of the deposits in the pool, and that it is in the approved association set, without revealing which one.
  • In version 2, the sender, recipient and amount of private transfers inside the pool.
  • In shielded payments, the sender, the receiver and the amount, and which notes were spent.
  • Memos sent with shielded payments.
What it does not hide
  • Shielding: the sending address, the token and the amount are public.
  • Unshielding: the arrival of the tokens at a public address.
  • That a Railgun transaction happened, and when.
  • A user's balances and history, to anyone the user has given a viewing key.
  • Deposits: the depositing address, the amount and the time.
  • Withdrawals: the receiving address, the amount and the time.
  • Ragequit exits, which are public withdrawals that give no privacy.
  • In version 1, the asset and chain chosen: each has its own pool, so a user hides only among people using the same asset on the same chain.
  • Request metadata such as the user's IP address, to a relayer.
  • Transparent payments, which show the sender, receiver and amount as on Bitcoin: about 70% of the ZEC supply was in transparent addresses on 2026-10-16, according to ZecStats.
  • The amount whenever ZEC moves into or out of a shielded pool, or from one pool to another.
  • Fees, the time a transaction is mined and how many shielded inputs and outputs, or actions, it contains.
  • The IP address a wallet uses to reach the network, which the protocol does not hide.
  • A holder's own shielded history, to anyone the holder gives a viewing key.

Where the figures come from

Value held

For a protocol, its total value locked (TVL) from DefiLlama, as counted in this site's totals; a protocol that is not counted in the totals, such as one marked inactive, shows none. For Monero and Zcash, the market cap of the coin from DefiLlama, as in the privacy-asset float on the overview. Each figure gives the time it was observed.

Anonymity set

The newest readings behind the charts on the Anonymity sets page, read once a day from each project's own contracts and nodes (file written 29 Oct 2026). Where a chart has several lines, such as one per pool or chain, the figure is their total on the newest day with a reading. The units differ between designs, so the figures are not directly comparable across protocols.

Profiles

Type, status, launch date, chains, what each design hides and what it does not, audits, incidents and the token come from the protocol's profile, each of which links its sources and gives the day it was checked. The counts are of the audit reports and incidents the profile lists; they do not rate safety.

Exchange access

For a privacy coin, its status on each exchange in the table on the Access and rules page, with the day that table was checked. Protocol tokens are not covered by that table.
