Verge
A multi-algorithm proof-of-work cryptocurrency, formerly Dogecoin Dark, whose privacy is network-level routing over Tor: amounts and the coins each transaction spends are public, as on Bitcoin.

How it works
Verge is a cryptocurrency with its own blockchain, whose genesis block, stamped "Name: Dogecoin Dark", dates from 9 October 2014; it launched as Dogecoin Dark under its lead developer, Justin Sunerok, and was renamed Verge in 2016. It has no premine and held no ICO. Miners add a block about every 30 seconds with proof-of-work across five algorithms, scrypt, x17, Lyra2rev2, myr-groestl and blake2s, and a rule limits how often one algorithm can follow itself; the README gives a total supply of 16,521,951,238 XVG. Verge Core refuses automatic chain switches that would undo more than six blocks, which its README calls a local safeguard rather than cryptographic finality, and a proof-of-stake transition was in testnet trials in October 2026.
Verge's privacy is mainly at the network level. Verge Core bundles Tor, and nodes and wallets can connect through it or run as Tor hidden services, so that peers and observers cannot tie a transaction to the user's IP address; Bitcoin Magazine reported in 2018 that several Verge wallets used Tor by default. Third-party descriptions, such as Komodo Platform's, say Verge also integrates I2P, but the documentation in its code repository covers only Tor. The ledger itself has no cryptographic privacy for amounts or spent coins: there are no ring signatures, confidential amounts or zero-knowledge proofs. Since its Wraith Protocol release of 2018, Verge has offered optional stealth addresses, which pay a one-time address that only the payer and payee can link to the recipient's published address; RingCT, also promised under Wraith, had not been implemented by September 2018, and no RingCT command appears in Verge Core's RPC reference today.
On the ledger, every amount, every input and output and the links between transactions are public and can be analysed as on Bitcoin; only the IP address behind a transaction, when Tor is used, and the recipient behind a stealth payment are protected. Since July 2026 Verge Core has also carried Secure Messaging, paid wallet-to-wallet messages encrypted with a fresh ephemeral key exchange for each message, each tied to an on-chain funding marker.
The chain has repeatedly been rewritten. In April and May 2018 attackers used false timestamps to mine blocks about once a second on one algorithm, a timewarp attack that, by press reports, earned them some 35 million XVG in May alone. On 15 February 2021 Coin Metrics recorded a reorganisation of more than 560,000 blocks, about 200 days of transactions, whose last common ancestor with the previous chain dated to July 2020; Verge said it was not a 51% attack and that a fix had been released.

What it hides and what it does not
What it hides
- The IP address behind a transaction, from peers and network observers, when the node or wallet connects through Tor, which Verge Core bundles.
- Which published address received a stealth payment: optional stealth addresses pay a one-time address that only the payer and payee can link to the recipient.
What it does not hide
- Every amount: Verge has no confidential transactions, ring signatures or zero-knowledge proofs.
- Which coins each transaction spends and the links between transactions, which can be traced as on Bitcoin, including for stealth payments.
- Ordinary payments to normal addresses, which link to the recipient's address in full; stealth addresses are optional.
- The IP address of a node or wallet that does not use Tor: I2P is not covered by the documentation in Verge's code repository.

Incidents
Eight incidents, oldest first: flaws, exploits, sanctions, prosecutions and other events that affected the project or its users.
-
Exploit
An attacker exploited a bug in Verge's difficulty retargeting by giving blocks false timestamps about an hour old, which let blocks be mined about once a second on one algorithm, as described by ocminer of the Suprnova pools; Verge called it a small hash attack lasting about three hours. The team hard forked to undo the exploited blocks, which at first left the network unable to sync; Security Affairs put the take at about USD 1 million, while The Next Web later reported 250,000 XVG.

-
Exploit
Attackers used the same timestamp flaw again, mining blocks one second apart on the scrypt algorithm over a few hours and taking about 35 million XVG, then worth more than USD 1.7 million, according to The Next Web; ocminer said it was the same glitch, while Verge said some mining pools were under a denial-of-service attack.

Upbit in South Korea ended XVG trading at 11:00 KST under a notice of 8 May 2020 citing the project's anonymous-transaction aims, having designated it an investment-warning asset and stopped deposits on 29 April.

Exploit
Coin Metrics recorded a reorganisation of more than 560,000 blocks, erasing about 200 days of transaction history, on a chain whose last common ancestor with the previous one dated to July 2020; Coin Metrics' researchers described an apparent 51% attack. Verge said there had not been a 51% attack, that malicious elements had tried to take over the chain and that its developers had released a fix with miners.

Risks
Verge offers little privacy on its ledger: amounts and the coins each transaction spends are public, so payments can be traced as on Bitcoin, and only the IP address behind a transaction, when Tor is used, and the recipient of an optional stealth payment are protected. The chain's history has been rewritten several times, by timewarp attacks in April and May 2018 and by a reorganisation of more than 560,000 blocks in February 2021, and its README describes the six-block limit on automatic reorganisations as a local safeguard, not finality or a guarantee against mining attacks; a planned move to proof-of-stake was still in testnet trials in October 2026. No security audit of Verge Core was found. Access through large exchanges has narrowed: Upbit delisted XVG in 2020 over its anonymity aims, and Huobi, Bitfinex, Gate's derivatives markets and Binance's margin service have dropped it, though Binance, HTX and MEXC listed it for spot trading on 13 October 2026. From 10 July 2027 the EU's Anti-Money Laundering Regulation will bar crypto-asset service providers from keeping accounts that allow transactions to be anonymised or obscured, including through anonymity-enhancing coins.
